AtlasCam vs. Telemetry Overlay

Both put speed, maps and other ride data on your video. Telemetry Overlay does it on your computer after the ride, using footage from almost any action camera. AtlasCam does it on your iPhone while you film. The right one depends on what you film with.

The real difference: when the data meets the video

Telemetry Overlay works after the ride. You bring the footage and its data to your computer, line them up, design your gauges and render the result. It works with almost any camera and gives you fine control over every gauge. You do need a computer and some time for each video.

AtlasCam works during the ride. The iPhone records the video and the data together, so there’s nothing to line up. You see your stats while you film, and the export takes a few taps on the phone. The trade-off is that it can only overlay video filmed in AtlasCam.

Which one should you pick?

Pick AtlasCam if…

  • You film on your iPhone.
  • You want the stats on screen while filming and in the clip, with no editing step.
  • You ride a Onewheel or VESC board, or want Apple Watch heart rate in the shot.
  • You want to post a vertical reel the same day.
  • You want to live stream to Twitch or YouTube with your stats on screen (Pro).

Pick Telemetry Overlay if…

  • You film on a GoPro, DJI, Insta360 or another action camera or drone.
  • You already edit on a computer and want detailed control over every gauge.
  • You need to combine data from several devices in one video.
  • You want to add overlays to footage you’ve already shot.

They also work together. If you film the big edit on an action camera and quick clips on your iPhone, the GPX route AtlasCam saves can go straight into Telemetry Overlay.

Questions

Is there a Telemetry Overlay app for iPhone?

Telemetry Overlay’s website lists versions for Windows, macOS and Linux and no phone app. It can use data recorded on a phone, but the editing happens on a computer. AtlasCam is an iPhone app that records the video and the data together. Here’s how it works.

Can AtlasCam add overlays to GoPro or drone footage?

No. AtlasCam overlays the data it recorded alongside the video, so it only works with video filmed in AtlasCam. For GoPro, DJI or Insta360 footage, Telemetry Overlay is the better fit.

Can I use AtlasCam and Telemetry Overlay together?

Yes. AtlasCam can share a ride’s route as a GPX file using Share Telemetry Only in the ride’s share menu, and Telemetry Overlay reads GPX files.

Which one costs less?

AtlasCam is free to download and export with. Pro is $2.99 a month, $29.99 a year or $79.99 once. Telemetry Overlay is listed at $199 as a one-time purchase that includes one year of updates and support.

Do I need a computer to use AtlasCam?

No. Recording, editing the overlay layout and exporting all happen on the iPhone. AtlasCam Studio, the Mac companion app, is there if you want to edit longer rides on a bigger screen.

Telemetry Overlay is a product of its respective owner. AtlasCam isn’t affiliated with or endorsed by it.
